THE FASTEST CIVIL AIRCRAFT IN THE WORLD EXCEEDED TWICE THE SPEED OF A SOUND. It was produced in the former Soviet Union and it´s known as Tupolev Tu-144. The first flight of this jet was realized in the end of 1968. Two months before the French and the English constructors introduced the much more famous model Concorde. The maximum speed of prototype Tu-144 was 2.430 km/h. Four turbo engines, however, consumed too much fuel. So the plane flew to a maximum distance of 3.000 km. After the upgrade it was 6.500 km. This plane came into a commercial operation in 1975 and since 1977 it flew on a regular line Moscow - Alma Ata. Only 16 planes Tu-144 were made.
